Gerrit Rietveld designed the Steltman Chair in 1963, which was the last chair he designed before his passing. It was designed for the refurnishing of the royal purveyor and The Hauge jeweller Steltman's shop in The Hague, Noordeinde. The two mirrored chairs where originally covered with white artifical leather, and the wooden version was built. after 1964, Rietvelds's death. (Buy a Steltman Chair? | Rietveld Originals, n.d.-d)

This chair is considered to be a sculpture. Rietveld was a member of De Stijl, a group of artists which collaborated around the monthly journal De Stijl in Holland during World War I. Artists of De Stijl devoted to three guiding principles: ''independent planar and linear elements; primary colors; and asymmetrical compositions.'' The dynamic sculptural form of the Steltman chair is derived from the creative goals of the De Stijl movement. (Saint Louis Art Museum, 2023)
